The Role

The Surface Mount (SMT) Process Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining surface mount technology (SMT) manufacturing processes to ensure high product quality, reliability, and production efficiency. This role supports new product introduction (NPI), drives continuous improvement initiatives, and provides technical expertise for SMT assembly operations.
Responsibilities 
  • Develop, implement, and optimize SMT processes including solder paste printing, pick-and-place, reflow soldering, AOI, and SPI.
  • Create and maintain work instructions, process flow diagrams, FMEAs, control plans, and other technical documentation.
  • Create machine programs for placement, AOI and associated production equipment from BOM and gerber data as applicable.
  • Troubleshoot production issues related to solder defects, placement accuracy, reflow profiles, and component reliability.
  • Analyse process data and yield metrics to identify root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Optimize reflow profiles for various PCB assemblies and component packages (e.g., QFN, BGA, fine-pitch devices).
  • Work closely with Quality, Manufacturing, and Design Engineering teams to improve DFM/DFT practices.
  • Support equipment selection, installation, validation, and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Train and mentor operators and technicians on SMT process best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with IPC standards (e.g., IPC-A-610, J-STD-001) and internal quality requirements.

About you

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Experience:
  • 3–7+ years of experience in SMT manufacturing or electronics assembly.
  • Hands-on experience with solder paste printing, stencil design, pick-and-place programming, and reflow oven profiling.
  • Experience troubleshooting solder defects such as bridging, tombstoning, insufficient solder, and voiding.
  • Familiarity with AOI, SPI, X-ray inspection, and process validation techniques.
Technical Skills:
  • Strong understanding of PCB assembly processes and materials.
  • Experience with statistical process control (SPC) and root cause analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of IPC standards and electronics manufacturing best practices.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, Gerber files, and assembly drawings.
